As of October 1, 2013, officers throughout the state of Maryland are ticketing for the sole offense of driving while using a handheld cell phone without a hands-free device. The fine for the first offense is $83 and increases for subsequent violations. Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is working with the Montgomery County Police Department to get the word out about this new law. It is important that you help spread the word and share this information with your teenage driver. Together, we can help make our roadways safer by keeping hands on the wheel, not on a phone.
