MLK and Gaithersburg Book Festival Literary Contests Open to MCPS Students
MCPS students have an opportunity to participate in the following literary contests:
2014 MLK Literary Contest & Visual Arts Show
Students at all grade levels are encouraged to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Literary Contest & Visual Arts Show. The 2014 theme is “Honoring the Legacy: Celebrate, Serve, Remember.” The essays and artwork should reflect an understanding and appreciation of the ideals of Dr. King’s life, achievements and aspirations. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.
The contest is sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee, the city of Gaithersburg and the Gazette Newspapers.
Gaithersburg Book Festival
The Gaithersburg Book Festival is holding a short story contest for students in grades 9-12 living in the Washington metropolitan area. Short stories must be no longer than 1,000 words and must begin with one of three lines provided on the contest website. Entries must be submitted electronically as a Microsoft Word document by Feb. 21, 2014. First, second and third place winners will be announced at the Book Festival on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
