The 2013-2014 school year got off to a great start on Monday, August 26, as MCPS opened its doors to a record number of students. More than 151, 000 students are expected to attend the district’s 202 schools this year, an increase of about 2,300 students from the 2012-2013 school year. Enrollment has grown by more than 10,000 students in the past five years and is expected to top 159,000 students by 2018-2019. MCPS is starting the new school year with 38 new principals and more than 800 new teachers.
The district is placing a strong focus on providing students with the knowledge and skills they need for success in the 21st century and will spend this year aligning its work to the new Strategic Planning Framework—Building Our Future Together.
Parents and students were invited to submit their favorite first-day-of-school snapshots on Monday. MCPS received more than 100 submissions, and you can view the gallery of first-day photos here.
Before classes got underway on Monday, more than 7,000 students and their families packed the grounds of the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville on August 24 for the annual MCPS Back-to-School Fair.
Parents had an opportunity to meet with MCPS staff, learn about school system programs and operations, and pick up information about community resources. Highlights of the fair included performances by student and community groups, free health screenings, and entertainment and games for the kids.
