Stedwick Students to Perform Opera at Kennedy Center
Stedwick Elementary School’s Let It Out Kids Opera Company will present its original opera on the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29.
The performance, The Other Side of the Canvas, is an opera written, produced, composed and performed by third graders in Mary Ruth McGinn’s class at Stedwick.
During the school year, the students have taken several field trips to learn more about creating an opera. They visited the Kennedy Center to watch Aida and received a backstage tour. They also visited the National Gallery of Art to get ideas for set design, and took a trip to the costume studio at the Washington National Opera. Guest speakers have also come to the school to help students with lyric writing, working as an ensemble and music production.
The performance is free and open to the public.
The Let It Out Kids Opera Company is supported and sponsored by the Washington National Opera, the Foundation for the Advancement of Music and Education, and Montgomery County Media.
