Superintendent, Board’s Policy Management Committee Propose New 2018–2019 Calendar Options
Below is the latest communication from Chief Operating Officer Andrew Zuckerman regarding the 2018–2019 calendar’s development. This message was emailed to staff on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
As I shared with you last Friday, the Board of Education’s Policy Management Committee was scheduled to meet on Tuesday, October 24th, to further discuss the 2018-2019 school calendar. At this meeting, which was held yesterday, staff presented the Superintendent’s proposed calendar for the 2018-2019 school year. Additionally, members of the Board’s Policy Management Committee requested that staff develop 3 additional calendar options for the full Board to consider at its November 14th business meeting. You can view the presentation and discussion from the October 24, 2017, Policy Management Committee meeting HERE and you can view the newly proposed calendars HERE.
The calendars proposed by Dr. Smith and members of the Board’s Policy Management Committee were based on extensive feedback from an array of stakeholders. Each one seeks to maximize the limited number of days available next year to address multiple interests. As you probably know by now, there are only 6 days available between September 3, 2018 (Labor Day) and June 14, 2019 (the last allowable day of school in the state of Maryland for 2018-2019) that can be programmed for non-required educational or operational priorities, such as Spring Break or grading/planning days. Determining how to utilize these limited number of days for multiple interests has been the challenge, and we have appreciated the feedback and perspectives offered from everyone.
The next step in the development of the 2018-2019 school year calendar will be for the full Board to discuss these new calendar proposals at the November 14th Board meeting. I anticipate that the Board will vote at the November 14th meeting to adopt the 2018-2019 school year calendar.

Have a great rest of the week.
