More than 100 MCPS high school students attended the inaugural Young Educators (Say Yes to Teaching) Symposium. The event, which was sponsored by MCPS, the Universities at Shady Grove and Montgomery College, encouraged students to pursue careers in education. The students attended breakout sessions and had an opportunity to network with other professionals and mentors.
Alpha Delta Kappa Offering Scholarships to Staff
The Maryland Beta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators, is offering a $1,500 scholarship for educators in MCPS or for employees who wish to become educators.
The scholarship is available to a MCPS employee studying to become a teacher, counselor or other educational specialist. It may also be used for professional development at a college or university to enhance the education of a MCPS teacher, counselor or other educational specialist. The scholarship must be used within one year from the date of notification of selection to receive the scholarship.

Retirement celebrations are being held for:
Jenny Skoda, supervisor in Innovative Technologies, after 30 years of service. It will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 21, at La Mexicana Restaurant, 16143 Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg. Attendees will be asked to pay their own way. Suzanne Harvey, assistant principal (28 years with MCPS), and Vicky Shaffer (36 years), special education resource teacher, both at Montgomery Blair High School. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 2, at Doubletree by Hilton Hotel, 15101 Sweitzer Lane in Laurel. The cost to attend is $40, which includes dinner, dancing and gifts. There will be a cash bar. Make checks payable to Montgomery Blair High School and send payment to the Montgomery Blair Financial Office, 51 University Blvd. East, Silver Spring, MD, 20901. Meghan McEwen-Markowicz, a kindergarten teacher at Beall Elementary School, died on March 12. She had worked for MCPS for one year.
Evelyn Kirkland Smith, a former MCPS music teacher, died on March 8. She began teaching at MCPS in 1989 and spent many years as a music teacher at Fox Chapel Elementary School.
