The MCPS elementary and secondary English Language Arts (ELA) teams in the Office of Curriculum & Instructional Programs (OCIP) have approved a selection of LGBTQ+-inclusive texts for use in the classroom.

The MCPS Board of Education Policy ACA, Nondiscrimination, Equity, and Cultural Proficiency states, “Instructional materials used in MCPS schools will reflect the diversity of the global community, the aspirations, issues, and achievements of women, persons with disabilities, persons from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, as well as persons of diverse gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.”

As with all curriculum resources, there is an expectation that teachers utilize the texts as a part of instruction. It is important to note that using the materials is optional as it is standard practice that teachers have a choice regarding which materials to use.

A list of newly approved LGBTQ-inclusive texts is included in the Curriculum section of the MCPS LGBTQ+ webpage.
