English Language Development Award Winners Announced

MCPS is pleased to announce the winners of 2021-2022 English Language Development (ELD) Awards. These awards recognize educators, leaders, and a community member who have gone above and beyond in their respective roles, showing leadership and perseverance in multilingual learning. This year, MCPS also launched the Two-Way Immersion (TWI) Andy Gomez Award, in honor of Andy Gomez, MCPS’s TWI Coordinator, who exemplified the three pillars of dual language education—bilingualism and biliteracy; high grade-level academic achievement and promotion to develop students’ sociocultural competence. This year’s winners are:
ELD Leader of the Year Award:
- Lisa Shorts, Principal at Waters Landing Elementary School
- Nick Chupka, Julie Ehrlich, Barbara Escobar, Brook Jefferson, Alana Murray, Kat Rodgers, Amrit Singh, and Kristen Sullivan, Emergent Multilingual Team at Shady Grove Middle School
- Douglas Rivera, Resource Counselor at Quince Orchard High
ELD Educator of the Year Award:
- Sandra (Sandi) Garcy, teacher, English Language Development, Cedar Grove Elementary School
- Mary Carvajal, teacher, English Language Development, Argyle Middle School
- Linn Turpin, teacher, English Language Development, Wheaton High School
Andy Gomez Two-Way Immersion Educator of the Year Award:
- Elena Sorto, teacher, Brown Station Elementary School
ELD Community Member of the Year Award:
- Consuelo Goodwin at Argyle Middle School
