MCPS to Continue Offering Accelerated Math Courses
National research shows that mathematics achievement has been impacted by the pandemic more than any other content area in K-12 education. The MCPS Department of Curriculum and Instructional Programs has developed a long-range plan to address the unlearned content that occurred during the Continuity of Learning phase of the pandemic in 2020. The plan also addresses the curriculum standards that were intentionally compacted, reduced or removed in order to adapt to the virtual learning schedule. The multi-year plan will focus on meeting the needs of struggling learners and will also determine how to best identify students who need accelerated courses. In response to many questions from the community, MCPS will maintain accelerated courses at the elementary, middle and high school levels. MCPS is also working with stakeholders to address helping students who are struggling learners, those who need social-emotional learning and English language development. More information about the MCPS Mathematics Plan will be shared at the May 25 Board of Education meeting.
