State Board Revises Operating Calendar for Athletics
On October 26, the Maryland State Board of Education approved a revised operating calendar for interscholastic athletics for school districts operating within the current framework outlined in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s (MPSSAA) Two Semester Plan. The revised calendar moves the start date for in-person seasons up from February 1, 2021 to December 7, 2020. This resolves multiple concerns with the previous operating calendar, including condensed seasons that included a two-week overlap between seasons.
The COVID-19 Task Force for MCPS Athletics, which has been preparing for the return of in-person conditioning and skill-based activities, will review the implications of this calendar adjustment and provide recommendations to MCPS leadership for review and consideration. MCPS will also review recommendations from the MPSSAA regarding the administration of winter sports.
MCPS will continue with operations as outlined in the R.A.I.S.E. Reimagined Framework for virtual athletics. The return of in-person activities will occur when health metrics allow and in alignment with the plan to return students to schools.
