Who will be the Next Student Member of the Board?
Applications are available for sophomores and juniors interested in serving as the Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) for the 2014-2015 school year. The deadline to submit applications is 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. The SMOB provides an informed student viewpoint on educational issues. The SMOB may author legislation, participate in discussions on all topics and has voting rights on certain issues.
The SMOB position is unpaid, but the student member will earn social studies credit, a minimum of 250 hours of Student Service Learning (SSL) hours, and will receive a $5,000 college scholarship.
An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 5-6 p.m. at the Student Affairs Office, 12900 Middlebrook Road in Germantown. The current student member, Justin Kim, as well as former SMOBs, will be available to offer insights and answer questions.
To be eligible to run for the position, students must live in Montgomery County and be enrolled as a sophomore or junior at an MCPS high school.
