Originating in Galveston, Texas at the end of the Civil War, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. MCPS offices and schools are closed on Monday, June 20, the federal commemoration of this day. The district encourages employees to reflect on the day’s significance and has provided resources to learn more about this federal holiday. Celebrating Juneteenth is important as we are reminded that one of MCPS’ core values is equity. MCPS believes that every student matters and academic outcomes should not be predictable by race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status.
