Clarksburg Students Donate Meals to Local Families

For the seventh year, Clarksburg High School Ambassadors students donated meals to local families for Thanksgiving. The 50 Ambassadors raised more than $5,000, enabling them to purchase 60 dinners from Safeway. The dinners were given to families at Rocky Hill Middle School and Clarksburg High School.

Blair Sophomore Wins Councilmember for a Day Contest

Malaika Wande, a sophomore at Montgomery Blair High School, has been named the winner of the Councilmember for a Day V.O.I.C.E.S (Virtual Online Innovative & Civically Engaged Storytelling) challenge, hosted by Montgomery County Councilmember Craig Rice. She joined the council on the dais as an honorary “Councilmember for a Day” and was recognized with a proclamation and a presentation of her video. Watch her winning video on affordable housing.

Swaying to the Sounds at Strathmore

Earlier this month, more than 12,000 second grade students enjoyed performances by the National Philharmonic Orchestra at the Music Center at Strathmore. This program gives students exposure to the world of classical music in a concert hall setting, inspiring a love and appreciation of music and the arts at a young age. Before attending, second graders learned about the instrument families of the orchestra and how the instruments work together in a concert setting. Watch the video.

Brown Station Elementary Students and Staff Thank First Responders

Students and staff at Brown Station Elementary School took a moment to say “thank you” to first responders following a devastating fire near the school in Gaithersburg. Watch the video.

A Winning Fall Season for Student Athletes

The Poolesville High School boys’ cross country team and the Damascus High School cheerleading team won their respective 2A state championship titles. This was the first-ever cheerleading championship title for MCPS. Congratulations to teams who also made it to the championship finals—Winston Churchill High School boys’ cross country and girls’ field hockey, Walter Johnson High School girls’ cross country, Poolesville’s girls’ cross country, and Sherwood High School’s cheerleading team, which came in third. The Walt Whitman High School girls’ soccer team captured a second consecutive 4A state championship.

Marching Bands Win Top Honors at Regional/State Championships

Thomas S. Wootton High School won the Maryland Marching Band Association (MMBA) Western Regional Championship in the Open-Small Class, while also earning awards for Best Color Guard, Best Overall Effect, Best Music Performance and Best Visual Performance. Quince Orchard High School won the Class 1A State Championship and Clarksburg High School won the Class 3A State Championship at the MMBA State Championships. Quince Orchard also won the award for Best Music Performance in its class, while Clarksburg won Best Percussion, Best Color Guard, Best Visual Performance and Best Overall Effect in its class.
