More than 100 French Immersion sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Silver Spring International Middle School participated in the state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron. First lady Dr. Jill Biden invited the students to participate in the visit. Students and the first ladies, both educators, toured Planet Word in Washington, D.C., and enjoyed a poetry reading. Some students had the opportunity to greet and engage with them over an interactive book device in the library.

WIN Time Gives Additional Academic Support to Goshen Students

Goshen Elementary School has a unique approach to helping students improve math and literacy skills. Its program, What I Need (WIN) time, offers reading, math and ESOL support, reading and math enrichment, and a focus on writing skills. Using school data, all students at Goshen are assessed for their needs, and grouped by skills and concepts they need to develop. Students participate in WIN time 30 minutes a day, four times a week. The additional support is provided by regular and special education teachers, ESOL teachers and paraeducators.

Goshen staff have good reason to believe the program helps students: 80 percent of students increased math and literacy MAP scores between the fall of 2021 and the spring of 2022. Watch a video on the program.
