Ritchie Park Elementary School celebrated Maryland Day on March 25 with a fun, outdoor event. The school held a Metric Marathon, which included relay races for students, staff and parents, and the Richard Montgomery High School track team. Runners, including Principal Andrew Winter, circled the school 59 times! Check out the photos.
Clarksburg High School Junior Honored by Audubon Naturalist Society
Noemi Bolanos, a junior at Clarksburg High School, was recognized by the Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS) for engaging in service that improves the quality of life for under-resourced Latinx communities.
Born in Costa Rica, Bolanos is a youth advisory board member of Montgomery County Student Advocates Protecting the Planet (MC SAPPLINGS). Her work with the nonprofit organization, One Montgomery Green, began in 2021 after an independent stream project on microplastics. Later that year, she began to co-design the youth environmental forum, Student Advocates Protecting the Planet. She is also a marketing intern at Recycle Leaders LLC, where she designs action research courses for students about food waste and microplastics pollution.
She was one of nine people honored earlier this month during ANS’ fourth Naturally Latinos Conference, a gathering of nature advocates and professionals working on environmental issues.
MCPS Team Qualifies for National Robotics Contest
A robotics team of students from three MCPS middle schools has qualified for a national competition. Team Kinokos competes with Capitol City Robotics. The team, which includes Briana Cruz of Silver Spring International; Esperanza Nazati and Athena Contreras of Takoma Park and Daniella LaCorte of Westland middle schools, will participate in the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas in May.
Students from 36 Schools Compete in National History Day Contest
More than 475 students from 29 MCPS middle schools and seven high schools were winners in the National History Day contest. See the list of winners and watch video of the awards ceremony. Students submitted projects focusing on the theme, Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences. Fifty-nine students are advancing to the state contest, which will take place on April 30 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
