A 2022 Walter Johnson High School graduate, Marie Andre (Joyce) Onana Mfege has been named a Dovey Johnson Roundtree Scholar at Spelman College this fall. She is one of 20 students to receive the scholarship, which includes the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board. While at Walter Johnson, Joyce was a member of the Minority Scholars Program (MSP). She was a town hall organizer and facilitator, assisting with planning and organizing topics for staff and students related to identifying micro-aggressions. Her efforts contributed to the English department offering an African American literature course for the first time.
Magruder Staff Honored for Life-Saving Actions
During a Sept. 8 Montgomery County Police Department awards ceremony, an MCPS security employee and a nurse were given the highest civilian award—the Chief’s Certificate of Appreciation. Ken Nelson, security team leader at Col. Zadok Magruder High School, and school nurse Megan Wilson were honored for their life-saving actions during the shooting at Magruder in January.
Students Win Scholarships from Volunteer Organization, The Links
The Silver Spring, Maryland Chapter of The Links, Inc., a volunteer service organization of women committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans, has awarded 2022 scholarships to 10 MCPS students, and continuing scholarships to 13 others.

Five MCPS middle school students were named to a list of 300 top scientists in a competition by the Broadcom Foundation and the Society for Science. They are:

Educational Foundation Awards 14 Scholarships
The MCPS Educational Foundation has given 14 scholarships and awards worth $129,200 to Class of 2022 high school graduates and renewed scholarships for 13 scholarship recipients who are continuing their studies. They are:
