Watkins Mill Senior Wins Women of Tomorrow Award
Josie Oshagbemi, a senior at Watkins Mill High School, is a winner of the 2019 Maryland’s Women of Tomorrow Award. She was selected from more than 60 applicants of middle and high school students from across the state. The committee looks for high academic scores, high levels of engagement within the school community, and involvement with community service. She will receive the award during a banquet in Annapolis in March.
Oshagbemi is deeply involved in the Watkins Mill school community. For the past four years, she has served in student government. She has organized homecoming events, pep rallies, fundraisers, charity drives and American Red Cross blood drives. She works to make sure student voices are heard and often has ideas to make the school and community healthier, safer and more productive.
She has also been a peer leader. She has helped with New Student Orientation for the past three years by giving tours of the school to new students, answering questions and being a friendly face to new students and parents. Oshagbemi plays varsity tennis, and is involved in the National Honor and Foreign Language societies, the African Student Association, debate team, Sisters in Success, Minority Scholars Program and the Principal’s Leadership Club. She volunteers at the community library, and created a program to encourage elementary students to find a similar passion for reading.
A Nigerian immigrant, Oshagbemi is in the top five percent of her 2019 graduating class. She hopes to study international business and banking in college.
