The Rocky Hill Middle School archery team placed fourth in the Maryland National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) state tournament. Of the more than 600 archers who competed, Rocky Hill had four archers qualify for the NASP national tournament in Louisville, Ky. this month. This will be the seventh year that we have had archers qualify for the national tournament. More than 15,000 archers from around the country will participate.
Rocky Hill’s team, which has about 30 student members, has been competing for seven years. John Leck, science teacher at Rocky Hill, is the coach. Also competing at the NASP tournament this year were archers from Clarksburg High School (the only MCPS high school to have a team), and Julius West Middle and John Poole Middle schools.
Stedwick Third Graders Perform Ukelele Concert
Third graders at Stedwick Elementary School spent the year learning to play the ukulele and creating original music and poetry. Watch this video of students talking about the process and performing at the school.
Loiederman Raises More than $5,000 for Pennies for Patients
Mario Loiederman Middle School participated in the Pennies for Patients Campaign to raise money to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The campaign, which lasted three weeks, raised nearly $5,300. The school held a homeroom competition. Forty-two homeroom classes competed to raise the most money. Paige Keller’s class was the winning homeroom with more than $649 donated. Led by 8th grade counselor Chet Hardy, the counseling office spearheaded the Pennies for Patients fundraiser.
Rosemont Students Celebrate Arbor Day with Tree Planting
Rosemont Elementary School third and fourth grade students joined officials with the city of Gaithersburg in celebrating Arbor Day on May 3. Mayor Jud Ashman offered remarks and helped students plant a tree.
Daly Elementary Student to Compete in National Scholarship Pageant
Capt. James E. Daly Elementary School student Cristiana Lynn Reid-Thompson will compete for the national title of USA National Jr. Princess at the USA National Miss Scholarship Pageant this summer. Cristiana, who takes tap, ballet and karate, and has completed more than 25 community service hours, will represent Maryland in the competition.
