Students Taste Test Vegan Menu Options, and More Fun News

At right, Ype Von Hengst, executive chef at Silver Diner, created the vegan recipes.
As part of a partnership between MCPS, Real Food for Kids and Silver Diner, students from four schools taste-tested new vegan meals for the school menu. Students from culinary programs at Takoma Park Middle School, as well as Poolesville, Springbrook and Paint Branch high schools provided feedback and discussed whether they would like the items added to the lunch menu. The offerings were created with feedback from other students.
The new menu items were: Thai red curry on whole grain rice, white bean and pesto dip with roasted tomatoes; three-bean torta with roasted corn salad and sweet-heat potatoes. Watch the video and see a photo gallery.
Others at the event included: Ype Von Hengst, executive chef at Silver Diner who created the recipes; Dr. Patrick Murphy, deputy superintendent; and Barbara Harral, director of the Division of Food and Nutrition Services.
