Summer will be here before you know it and is a great time to do the things you were unable to accomplish during the school year. You can begin a healthy habit, complete projects around your house, and visit the doctor for your annual physical.

Along with learning about your health during your checkup, you can earn an incentive on your health insurance premiums through the Wellness Initiatives program. By participating in the program each year, staff who are covered by an MCPS-provided medical insurance plan through CareFirst or Kaiser Permanente pay a lower percentage of their health insurance costs.

To receive these rate reductions, complete both a biometric health screening and your medical insurance provider’s online health risk assessment yearly. By completing both a biometric health screening and an online health risk assessment within each year’s designated time frame,* you will pay 2 percent less of the total cost of your health insurance during the next calendar year. (If you complete a screening or an assessment, but not both, you will pay 1 percent less.)

Throughout the summer, Well Aware will hold free biometric health screenings with the two medical insurance providers at MCPS central offices. For dates, times and exact locations, visit Well Aware’s Biometric Health Screenings web page. By attending one of the screenings associated with your medical insurance plan or having an annual physical with your primary care physician, you will satisfy the requirement for the 1 percent rate reduction.

For details about the Wellness Initiatives program, including instructions for accessing your medical insurance provider’s health risk assessment, be sure to visit the Wellness Initiatives web page.

*The time frame is between the first day of fall Open Enrollment and the Friday before the next Open Enrollment begins a year later. To receive the rate reductions in 2019, complete your biometric health screening and health risk assessment by October 5, 2018.
