The Office of Human Resources and Development, in partnership with local colleges and universities, is hosting several virtual information sessions for employees who want to begin teacher preparation programs, or for current teachers and other employees who want to pursue continuing education opportunities for the 2021-2022 school year. Interested employees should register for the information sessions on Professional Development Online (PDO), or email the contact person from the college or university. Information sessions will be recorded.

Teacher Preparation Partnerships

Teacher preparation partnerships are pathways for supporting services employees who are seeking initial certification to teach in specific content areas. Upcoming information sessions are listed below. RSVP on PDO to receive the meeting link and detailed program information. Meeting links are sent via email to registered participants on the day of the information sessions.

How to Become a Teacher in MCPS: Thursday, Sept. 30, 4:30–5:30 p.m.

Have you considered pursuing a career in teaching in MCPS, but are uncertain how to begin the process? Are you interested in earning the requirements that will lead to teaching certification? If so, join us for the workshop: How to Become a Teacher in MCPS.

Participants will hear about the commitment MCPS has for supporting services employees who want to become teachers; examine the Maryland State Department of Education certification process; explore the various degree pathways for teacher certification; and learn about the MCPS offices and departments that help employees pursuing careers in teaching. RSVP on PDO (course #87524).

Towson University Master’s of Teaching (MAT) in Special Education: Tuesday, Sept. 28, 4:30–5:30 p.m.

Towson University MAT in Special Education is for employees who are seeking initial teacher certification in special education. Students may enroll in one of three tracks:

  • Special Education: Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 3)
  • Special Education: Elementary/Middle Education (grades 1-8)
  • Special Education: Secondary Education (grades 9-12)

The MAT in Special Education is a cohort program that follows a specific course sequence and timeframe for completion. The next cohort begins in the fall of 2022. RSVP on PDO (course #90585).

University of Maryland (UMD) Creative Initiatives in Teacher Education (CITE): Wednesday, Sept. 22, 4:30–5:30 p.m.

CITE prepares participants to become general education teachers in grades 1-6. UMD CITE participants, who hold bachelor’s degrees, work as paraeducators during the program. CITE students begin internship experiences throughout the six-semester program and must be willing to work at least two hours each day in the general education elementary classroom with an MCPS mentor teacher. The next cohort will begin January 2022. The deadline to apply is: Monday, Nov. 1. RSVP on PDO (course #87596).

Continuing Education and Educational Leadership Partnerships

Continuing education and educational leadership partnerships continue recruitment and offer information sessions for interested employees who hold initial teacher certification.

Hood College for Educational Leadership: Recruitment for fall 2022 begins in November.

The Educational Leadership Program is recruiting for the 36-credit Master’s of Science in Educational Leadership. The 18-credit Certification Preparation program is full with a waitlist. To be eligible, employees should have three or more consecutive years of successful classroom teaching experience. Courses are taught by current and former MCPS administrators. An accelerated course format allows students to finish the master’s degree program in three years, and leaves students prepared for Administrator I and II certification. For more information, contact Dan Shea.

McDaniel College Educational Leadership with Administrator I Certification: Opportunity is available for this fall; courses begin in October. With courses including Brain-Based Teaching and Learning, Social and Emotional Learning and Technology’s Impact on Teaching, this program prepares teachers to become transformational leaders. Don’t miss this chance to join McDaniel’s newly designed program, Master of Science in Innovations in Teaching and Learning with Administrator I certification. For more information, contact LaTonya Henson.

Higher education partnerships are options for MCPS employees in permanent positions. The full list of all partnerships is available on the MCPS Higher Education Partnership website.
