NAACP Parents’ Council Holds Kickoff Meeting
The NAACP Parents’ Council held its annual kickoff meeting at Gaithersburg High School on Monday, Oct. 16. The event brought parents and MCPS staff together to discuss and share ideas on how to deepen relationships and foster collaboration between schools and families. Speakers during the event emphasized the importance of addressing structural inequities in public education and increasing opportunities for all students in MCPS. The keynote speaker was Karl W. Reid, executive director of the National Society of Black Engineers and an advocate for affecting change in the education system on a national scale. Participants attended breakout sessions that discussed effective parent-teacher conferences, the latest brain research on closing the opportunity gap and restorative justice.
