Student Groups Perform During MLK Tribute
Several MCPS students and groups performed during the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday tribute and celebration on January 15 at the Music Center at Strathmore.
Choirs from Clarksburg High School and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School sang; the Latin dance group from Gaithersburg High School and a student dancer from Albert Einstein High School performed, and a student from Montgomery Blair High School delivered a spoken word piece.
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett hosted this year’s tribute, and Board of Education President Mike Durso spoke. Northwest High School student Jeanie Chang and Ritchie Park Elementary School student Noah Pittman-Johnson honored Leggett with a special presentation.
The event also included a choral performance by the iconic Carlton Reese Memorial Unity Choir. The choir is the current embodiment of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights Choir, formed in 1959 at the direction of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth to offer music and inspiration at the mass meetings of the Birmingham civil rights movement and the 16th Street Baptist Church.
