Information on Telework for Instructional Staff

The purpose of this communication is to provide clarity to the Message for Principals/Telework for Instructional Staff message sent on April 26 (posted below). Telework is only available when staff are scheduled to work. Ten-month staff who are not scheduled to work, as detailed in the 2021-2022 Work Schedules, will have a no-work no-pay day on May 2, 2022. If staff, such as paraeducators or secretaries, who are not scheduled to work make a request for telework on May 2, 2022, they should be reminded that this is a no-work, no-pay day.
The following message was emailed to all MCPS principals on April 26.
The purpose of this communication is to provide guidance to principals with respect to the availability of telework on May 2, May 18, June 17 and June 21 for instructional staff. To recognize and support all instructional staff and to support a positive personal and professional balance, 10-month instructional staff—members of Montgomery County Education Association and the Service Employees International Union, Local 500—may be permitted to telework as provided below.
“Instructional staff” are identified as all MCEA members and SEIU members who work directly with students as their regular duty assignment, paraeducators, media assistants and composition assistants. Except as indicated, the opportunity to telework these dates does not extend to instructional staff who are scheduled to participate in professional development activities that require in-person attendance or whose work is not portable and cannot be effectively accomplished off site. The telework request form and training are not required for instructional staff to telework on these dates. Twelve-month staff and 10-month staff who do not have instructional duties/non-instructional staff are free to complete the approval process established in Regulation GEH-RA Teleworking to request telework.
All instructional staff may choose to telework on Monday, May 2, with their principal’s permission, provided there are no scheduled in-person professional development activities and the individual’s work is portable and can be effectively accomplished off-site.
In accordance with the negotiated Amended Memorandum of Understanding regarding COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing and Recovery Plan for the 2021-2022 School Year, all MCEA instructional staff may choose to telework on Wednesday, May 18. Principals may not schedule meetings or professional development for MCEA instructional staff on that afternoon. All SEIU instructional staff may choose to telework on Wednesday, May 18, with their principal’s permission, provided there are no scheduled in-person professional development activities and the individual’s work is portable and can be effectively accomplished off-site.
To support the effective end-of-school check-out processes, all instructional staff are required to work in-person on the June 17 early release day and the June 21 professional day.
