Staff Collect, Donate Children’s Coats and Toys
For the past nine years, employees in the Office of Human Resources and Development (OHRD) have been collecting coats, toys and other items for students.
Annually, OHRD staff members raise money to buy the items, which are given to the Prekindergarten/Head Start program and donated to students who need them.
This year, they ended up with 83 new coats to donate. Forty-three of those were brought in by staff members and the rest were bought from money brought in from fundraisers. The fundraising events brought in more than $1,200 from raffling off homemade pies and desserts on Pi(e) Day in March and on Thanksgiving, and selling handmade holiday ornaments. Staff made and donated all of the pies, desserts and ornaments. Proceeds were also used to buy healthy snacks for kids to have during winter break, as well as socks, hats, gloves and 60 toys.
Holiday Bags Donated to ESOL Families
For the fifth year, the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Chinese Women’s League (CWL) has collaborated with ESOL to donate holiday bags to families in need. ESOL parent community coordinators help to identify families.
Members of the CWL, an all-woman volunteer-based nonprofit organization, assembled 80 gift bags. Each gift bag contained a can of cookies and a $35 Safeway gift card. Christine Shen, spouse to the Taiwanese Ambassador to the U.S., was on hand to present the gift bags to ESOL administrators. The gifts were then distributed to ESOL families.
