MCPS and Montgomery County Team Up to Upgrade District’s Network Capacity
MCPS and Montgomery County recently expedited a planned upgrade of the district’s infrastructure to meet increased network bandwidth needs as students engage in both in-person and virtual learning.
Much of MCPS’ internet equipment relies on Montgomery County’s fiber lines, which enable communications service delivery for all county agencies. The planned upgrade of the fiber lines was initially scheduled to begin in summer 2021 and expected to exceed 90 days; however, Montgomery County and MCPS worked collaboratively starting in late March to expedite network capacity upgrades in only 11 days.
The upgrade has given schools more than 10 times the bandwidth they had previously and has positioned the district to meet future internet connectivity and bandwidth demands over the coming decade.
