Interest meetings are being held for two partnership programs—both for supporting professionals who want to teach.

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) are hosting an informational session for support professionals who are interested in pursuing Maryland state teacher certification to become MCPS teachers. Those who are interested will become prepared to teach in one of the following—Grades 7-12 certification areas: mathematics, biology, earth/space science, chemistry, physics or computer science; or in prekindergarten–Grade 12 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

Information meetings will be held from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on April 4, May 2 and June 6.

Please choose one meeting to attend. All information meetings are held at the MCPS Office of Human Resources and Development (OHRD) located at 45 W. Gude Dr. in Rockville. RSVP on PDO (course #87616).

For more information, contact Sydney Pinkard.

In addition, the University of Maryland Creative Initiatives in Teacher Education (CITE) program will hold an information meeting from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on April 9. This program is for MCPS paraeducators and other support professional staff with bachelor’s degrees, who are interested in becoming certified teachers at the elementary level (Grades 1-6). The CITE partnership allows participants to select a focus of special education or ESOL. RSVP on PDO (course #87596).

During the two-and-a-half-year program, candidates work as paraeducators who must have a minimum of two hours a day in a grade-level classroom working with a mentor teacher. Individuals are able to complete work-site internships without having to take leave.

All courses are offered in a hybrid model of online and face-to-face meetings in MCPS. The next CITE cohort will begin in January 2020. To be eligible for the partnership, individuals should be MCPS employees who have earned permanent status. Employees in temporary positions are not eligible for the CITE partnership.

For more information, contact Sydney Pinkard.
