At its business meeting on March 28, the Board of Education approved the following administrative appointments:

  • Robert Sinclair Jr., Consulting Principal, Department of Professional Growth Systems, Office of Human Resources and Development, Office of the Chief Operating Officer
  • Vilma C. Nájera, Principal, Watkins Mill High School
  • Jennifer M. Redden, Principal, Burning Tree Elementary School
  • Nichola A. Wallen, Principal, Goshen Elementary School

Professional Development Supports EML Students at Gaithersburg HS

For two years Gaithersburg High School staff have been working with an organization called Support Ed, to provide training for leadership, teachers and staff, focusing on how to work with Emerging Multilingual Learners (EML) students. The training allows teachers and staff to learn more about their students, and to develop strategies to make all content more available to multilingual learners. Watch the video.

Student Leaders Attend the Maryland Association of Student Councils Convention

Earlier this month, 48 MCPS student leaders participated in the annual convention of the Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC), held in Ocean City. More than 500 student leaders from across the state took part in leadership workshops, voted on MASC officers for next year and heard program updates.

Two MCPS students were elected to serve the Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC) for the 2023-2024 school year. Angelina Xu, far right, will serve as president, and Lumina Zhang will be treasurer (second from left in pink jacket).

Angelina Xu, a junior at Richard Montgomery High School, was elected MASC president for 2023-2024. Lumina Zhang, a sophomore at Winston Churchill High School, was elected treasurer for 2023-2024.

Fourteen high school student leaders presented self-written workshops to their peers. They were:

  • Advika Agarwal, Anusha Krishna and Jason Liaw, Poolesville
  • Aliyah Ali, Paint Branch
  • Shairee Arora, Daniel Suh and Angelina Xu, Richard Montgomery
  • Anna John, Walter Johnson
  • Arvin Kim, Walt Whitman
  • Thandi Labor and Sophie Nguyen, Rockville
  • Sam Ross, Montgomery Blair
  • Praneel Suvarna, Clarksburg
  • Lumina Zhang, Winston Churchill
