Registration Coming Soon for Summer Professional Development

prof dev magnifying glassStarting at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, March 30, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses for the summer semester 2015 will be available for registration through the Professional Development Online (PDO) system. The summer semester runs from mid-June 2015 through August 2015. Teachers have priority registration in all CPD courses.

Support professional staff and substitute teachers may register on PDO for CPD courses but will be considered on a space-available basis.

The CPD registration fee will be assessed to permanent employees via payroll deductions after the successful completion of the course. Employees with outstanding balances must clear their accounts before registering for new classes. Employees on long-term leave should contact the CPD office to make payment arrangements.

Continuing Professional Development

For 12-Month Employees:

If you are a 12-month employee and are planning to take MSDE/CPD courses during the duty day for credit, please provide a copy of your approved annual or personal leave slip to the CPD Registrar. This information is requested for auditing purposes only. If you do not want to receive credit for MSDE/CPD courses, let the CPD Registrar know and the certification unit will be notified of your decline of credit. This will be noted in your certification file for future references.

* Per the Leave Unit, all 12-month employees are required to use personal or annual leave to attend any MSDE/CPD course during the duty day.

McDaniel Offers Certificate Program in Equity and Excellence

McDaniel College is offering a five-course, 15-credit graduate certificate program in Equity and Excellence in Education. Candidates will acquire new skills and perspectives on the challenging work of becoming culturally responsive practitioners. The program brings together educators from across the county to study theory, research, and the practice of teaching and leading for equity in the classroom, school and beyond. All courses are offered at convenient locations in Montgomery County at a discounted tuition rate.

An interest meeting will be held from 4–5:30 p.m. in the Maple Room at 45 W. Gude Dr. in Rockville on Wednesday, March 25. Register on PDO (course #85548) to attend.

Montgomery College Offers Teacher Prep Program

Montgomery College is offering an innovative teacher preparation program for individuals with at least a bachelor’s degree who wish to become teachers in MCPS secondary schools. The Alternative Certification for Effective Teachers (ACET) program is designed to address teacher shortage at the middle and high school levels in fields such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Spanish, Technology Education, and French and Spanish (PreK-12).

The next interest meeting is being held at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 13 on the Germantown campus (HT 216). See this list for future meetings.

Program recruitment for the 2016 cohort is ongoing, with applications accepted from July 1–Oct. 15, 2015. Candidates are expected to complete classroom observations prior to applying. CITE Program Offers Master’s Degree, Maryland Certification

The University of Maryland, College Park is seeking candidates for the Creative Initiatives in Teacher Education (CITE) Partnership program. Successful completion of this 18-month program results in a master’s degree in elementary education and Maryland certification in grades 1–6. The program targets paraprofessionals, support staff and others who hold bachelor’s degrees and want to become teachers.

During the program, candidates work in MCPS as paraeducators. For more information, visit the website.
