Restructuring of Central Office and Vision for the Future
In case you missed it, on June 11, Deputy Superintendent Monifa McKnight sent a message to staff regarding a reorganization of central office. It’s reprinted below.
On February 10, 2020, Dr. Smith shared his vision for the future of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). This vision is rooted in our shared belief of ensuring excellence and equity for all students. As part of this vision, we presented a restructuring of the central office for the 2020-2021 school year designed to break down silos so that we can more effectively integrate our work, serve our students, and achieve our goal of preparing all students to thrive in their futures.
Since that presentation, I have engaged with internal and external stakeholders to get additional input on how to ensure the central office is efficiently and effectively organized to support schools, students and staff. Then came the COVID-19 pandemic that has challenged us to coordinate, collaborate and communicate in new ways and at a deeper level to ensure continuity of learning for our students.
Based on the feedback we received and what we’ve learned during this crisis, we have made additional revisions to the organizational structure. These revisions include:
- Bringing together the Office of Human Resources and Development and the Office of Employee Engagement and Labor Relations under the supervision of the Office of the Deputy Superintendent
- Connecting operations with the offices of Technology, Communications and Partnerships under the retitled office of Engagement, Innovation and Operations
- Transitioning the Athletics Unit, Student Leadership and Extracurricular Activities, and the Division of Title I and Early Childhood Programs and Services to the supervision of the Area Associate Superintendents for School Support and Improvement
- Realigning departments in the Office of Curriculum and Instructional Programs to create two new departments– the Department of Prekindergarten-12 Curriculum and the Department of College and Career Readiness and Districtwide Programs
- Adding supervision of the new CARES Act funding and programming to the responsibilities of the Division of Title I and Early Childhood Programs and Services
I believe these additional refinements to our central office structure will ensure that we are even more effective in our work.
While this school year is ending in a way that none of us ever imagined, and the 2020-2021 school year will likely not begin in a traditional way, I remain optimistic about what we can achieve together for our students.
