Roberto Clemente’s Son Visits School Named for His Father
Students at Roberto Clemente Middle School got a visit from Luis Clemente, the son of the school’s namesake, on Oct. 24. Clemente was in town to present the Roberto Clemente Humanitarian Award to the Major League Baseball (MLB) winner during a World Series game at Nationals Park. He spoke to students about the importance of helping others.
He acknowledged students with the greatest number of Student Service Learning hours, and rewarded them with MLB merchandise. Students also learned about Project Hope, a global health and humanitarian relief organization that has worked with Clemente’s foundation and MLB, to address some of the world’s biggest public health challenges. Clemente also challenged students to write letters of encouragement to children in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian’s destruction this past summer.
