If you work and have young children, anything can happen on any given day.

Your kid comes down with the stomach flu. The babysitter breaks her leg. You wake up in the morning and school is closed because of snow (but you still have to report to work).

These unpredictable situations happen all the time, and it is why supporting services employees are encouraged to sign up for Care@Work. Care@Work is emergency back-up child care, a benefit available to SEIU members.

If you’re already signed up when the unexpected occurs, you will be ahead of the game. When you enroll at mcpsmd.care.com, the service will ask a few basic questions about your needs and confirm personal information, such as address and phone number. After that, you’re ready to use the benefit. SEIU members can download the Care@Work app to access the benefits and have information texted to them. Care@Work can get you in touch with vetted caregivers—either center-based or in-home. The caregivers are certified in first aid and CPR. Staff can request to use up to five days per fiscal year.

Supporting service staff members can sign up for the service by visiting mcpsmd.care.com, by using the Care@Work app, or by calling 855-781-1303. Eligible staff members may also request reimbursement for up to $50 per day per child for the cost of the alternative child care. The reimbursement helps pay for emergency care you found yourself that is provided by a licensed child care provider.

Care@Work is intended to support SEIU bargaining unit members deal with an emergency break in their regular child care arrangements, or situations where the care they have paid for is unavailable. Care@Work strives to make this benefit convenient and easy by arranging and paying for care for eligible staff members with only a small co-pay. Supporting services employees can choose in-home or center-based care for their children and dependents, aged 16 years old and younger.

More information is available on the Emergency Child Care Fund webpage.
