Staff Can Develop Remote Projects for SSL Opportunities
Student Service Learning (SSL) hours remain a state graduation requirement for the 2020-2021 school year. MCPS students must earn 75 SSL hours to graduate.
MCPS has temporarily amended the SSL guidelines to include select virtual/remote opportunities until schools return to normal status. Students may find specific nonprofit-hosted SSL opportunities here and here, and an overview of the current state of the MCPS SSL program here.
Course-embedded SSL opportunities are continuing through distance learning platforms. In addition, any MCPS staff member may develop a virtual/remote school-hosted SSL project with their students (such as an advocacy/awareness campaign or hands-on project). Staff are encouraged to consider hosting a virtual/remote service project with classes, clubs, teams or other student groups as a valuable and meaningful way to engage students in service.
The MCPS Office of Student Service Learning has an established process for reviewing and approving school-hosted SSL opportunities that are supervised and monitored by school staff members in order to provide equitable access to service-learning opportunities for students. The school-hosted SSL opportunity form can be found here.
Please feel free to email the SSL dropbox with questions or with service project ideas.
