Two MCPS Schools Win National Blue Ribbon Award
The U.S. Department of Education (USDE) awarded the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School award to Farmland Elementary School and Ronald McNair Elementary School. The two schools attended the event, held at the historic Omni-Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., which honored 342 schools from 44 states and the District of Columbia.
The students in each of these schools are high achievers in reading and mathematics, and many serve a significant number of economically disadvantaged students. McNair and Farmland are the 38th and 39th MCPS schools to be named National Blue Ribbon Schools.
Both schools were named Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools in December 2016, qualifying them for consideration to receive National Blue Ribbon status.
Second Graders Attend Strathmore Concerts
Nearly 13,000 MCPS second graders were treated to a performance by the National Philharmonic at the Music Center at Strathmore this week. Now in its 13th year, students experienced an all-new program called “Music: It’s Element-ary.” Earlier this month, more than 12,000 fifth graders visited Strathmore for a blues and jazz program. The Strathmore Student Concerts help build a love of music and reinforce musical concepts students are learning in school.
