Weather Make-Up Days Cause Changes to School Calendar
This email was sent from Chief Operating Officer Andrew Zuckerman to employee Outlook email inboxes on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
I am writing with an update on this year’s school calendar and the schedule for emergency weather make-up days. MCPS will now open school on Friday, June 14, 2019 as an emergency weather make-up day.
MCPS has closed schools three times this school year—November 15, 2018, January 14, 2019, and January 30, 2019—in response to emergency weather conditions. Our MCPS school calendar has 182 student instructional days, 2 more than the minimum of 180 school days as required under State law. As a result, we currently only need to make-up one day so far. As noted above, this day will be made up on Friday June 14, 2019.
If we have a fourth school closure due to emergency weather conditions, then the next emergency weather make-up day will be Wednesday, June 5, 2019.
After that, the school calendar contains two additional emergency weather make-up days—April 17 and April 18, 2019. Recognizing that these make-up days would further encroach on a shortened spring break, we will consult with stakeholders, including SEIU, MCEA, MCAAP and MCCPTA, about the feasibility of using the week of June 17, 2019 for emergency weather make-up days. School districts are now permitted to extend the school year past June 15—the final date allowed for instruction under the 2016 Governor’s Executive Order on school calendars—for the express purpose of making up missed instructional days due to inclement weather. This was not an option for districts at the time the Board of Education adopted the 2018-2019 school calendar, so we will consult with our partners about this possibility if we need to make up additional days.
Please note that in a typical year we do not need to close school for more than 4 days due to inclement weather, so I am hopeful that the rest of winter will be kind to us with respect to the school calendar. But in the event we do need to close again, I wanted you to have the framework for emergency weather make-up days should we need them.
I will reach back out to you again very soon with the final schedule for emergency weather make-up days after consulting with our employee associations and other stakeholders about the use of June 17, 2019 through June 21, 2019 for emergency weather make-up days in lieu of April 17 and April 18.
